Update (posted 5/18/11): Last night, experts on post-high school education offered parents and students insights and tips about preparing for college or trade school...and doing it early.
• "Start thinking about college NOW...Research says to begin no later than 6th grade. Waiting until your child gets to high school may be too late."
—
Keynote Speaker Manny Barbera, Vice President, Silicon Valley Education Foundation (Download presentation slides - PDF 7.4 MG.)
- Third grade writing skills can be a predictor of post-high school success.
- Strong fifth grade math skills make meeting college A-G requirements more likely.
- Eighth grade Algebra I is a gateway course to college admission.
• "I wanted to thank you for the great program last night...I thought that it was very worthwhile and hope that you continue to offer similar events with the hopes of increased participation as time goes on."
