Who is eligible for TK
(what age/birthdate)?

For the 2012-13 school year:

Where will the TK classes
be located?
|
Proposed 2012 locations are Balckford, Capri, and Lynhaven schools. It is the Governing
Board’s desire to offer a TK class at each elementary school campus, pending
available funding and capacity.

3.
Will my child
automatically attend kindergarten at the same school where s/he attended TK?
|
It’s not automatic—unless that school
is the child’s “Resident School.” School placement for kindergarten begins with identifying which school
serves the child’s home address. (the “Resident School”) Parents may request a different school
during the annual kindergarten Open Enrollment period. (Refer to Board Policy
5116.1).

4.
Is TK required?
|
No. Enrollment in TK and
kindergarten is voluntary (though highly recommended). Parents may wait and enroll their
children in kindergarten the following year.

Who will teach TK?
|
The TK teachers will be selected from among
the pool of highly qualified and credentialed faculty members who expressed
interest in teaching the new grade.

6.
Is TK an all-day or part
time program?
|
The TK day will be as
long as the kindergarten day, which is about 6 hours.

7.
Will I have to re-enroll
my TK child for kindergarten next year?
|
No. Children who complete TK will be
pre-enrolled in school for the following year and assigned to kindergarten in
the school that serves the child’s home address. (Parents who wish to request
a different school for kindergarten need to participate in Open Enrollment
in January-February 2013.)

I submitted a TK
registration packet. When will I
find out placement for my child?
|
A preliminary placement
notice will be sent in mid-April 2012 to families who submit completed
packets by March 31, 2012.

What curriculum will be used?
|
TK in CUSD will use curriculum that bridges
preschool and kindergarten.

|

No. Los niños que completen el TK serán matriculados de antemano en
la escuela para el próximo año y se les asignará al kínder en la escuela que atienda
el domicilio en casa del niño. (Los padres que deseen solicitar una escuela diferente para el kínder, necesitan participar en la Matriculación Abierta en
enero-febrero de 2013).

Se enviará a mediados de abril de 2012 una
notificación preliminar de colocación a las familias que entreguen los

hace puente entre pre-escolar y el kínder.

How can I help my child prepare for TK?
Learning can be fun. Here are 4 simple ways to help your child get ready for school.
1. Play with your child
- Games help to build your child’s general coordination and ability to follow directions, recognize colors, shapes and letters. It also helps develop patience for sharing and taking turns and interest in trying new things.
- Cleaning up toys is an opportunity for your child to learn to count objects and to cooperate with others while gaining confidence in his/her abilities.
2. Read with your child
- Reading is an opportunity to help your child become familiar with books and words, to practice sitting still, listening and recounting a story, to learn to recognize letters of the alphabet, and to notice when words rhyme, such as “shoe” and “glue,” “goat” and boat.”
- Reading signs and labels helps your child develop a greater vocabulary.
3. Talk with your child as you do every day things together
• Encourage him/her to verbally express needs and wants and to ask adults for help.
• Practice eating, using the toilet, washing hands without help.
• Practice counting objects, such as toys, items in the grocery cart, etc.
• Practice writing his/her own first name.
• Encourage curiosity, trying new things and asking questions.
• Notice the shapes and colors of objects around you. Look for circles, triangles, squares. Notice items that are red, blue, green, yellow, brown and black.
