Rosemary School Earns Countys Hoffmann Award for Exemplary Programs

Campbell, California—The innovative Rocket Time at Rosemary School, in Campbell, has led to tremendous gains in student achievement, made it a model for other schools and earned it the County School Board Associations Annual Hoffmann Award.

Since implementing Rocket Time in 2007, Rosemarys API increased by 74 points to 711, making it the school with the second highest API growth of all elementary schools in Santa Clara County. The English Language Learners (ELL) outperformed every other school that had a statistically significant ELL population. Fueled largely by Rosemarys success, the Campbell Union School District boasted the highest API gains for the English Language subgroup (+38 API points). Since the district overall grew by 18 API points, the gap was narrowed between ELL and every other subgroup.

The results go beyond test scores: Rocket Time has helped to transform the school climate, too.

There is a palpable positive energy that greets people who visit Rosemarys classrooms. Teachers are energized, lessons are rigorous, students are engaged, and there is a demonstrated belief that every student can succeed. The classrooms are full of teachers and educational associates working with small groups according to their needs. Teachers use data chats, Focal 5 students, and other systems for tracking standards and ensuring equity in student access to what is being taught. Students can be overheard commenting that Rocket Time is their favorite time of the day. Teachers collaborate with each other as they map the curriculum to make sure the students are prepared for the intermittent benchmark tests.

Cara Bergen, ExCEL coach and Executive Director of West Coast Center for Educational Excellence, has identified Rosemary as a model school for educators to visit and learn from the Rocket Time success.

When asked how their school was able to make the significant gains they achieved in one year, teachers answers point back to the work done as part of Rocket Time—professional collaboration, focus on individual learning needs, high expectations for all students, flexibility of the groups, and the commitment from the administration to providing the resources needed.
