Local Students to Compete in Prestigious Chronicle Spelling Bee
February 10, 2009—Three Campbell Union School District middle school students are headed to U.C. Berkeley this month to compete in the annual Chronicle Spelling Bee.
Analisa Reyes of Campbell Middle School, Ryan Bald of Monroe, and Rex Gao of Rolling Hills won the Top Speller title for their respective schools, and earned the right to go to the next phase of the competition: the Written Spelling Bee, which will be held at the Lawrence Hall of Science on the UC Berkeley Campus on Sat., Feb. 21, 2009.
The top 50 spellers from the Written competition will go on to the Final Spelling Bee on March 21st, in San Francisco, and the single winner of the Final Spelling Bee will go to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC in May.
�The Spelling Bee is one of very few academic competitions between the schools during the school year,� said Campbell Union School District teacher Tracy Brown. Brown, working with teachers from the district�s three middle schools, coordinated the District�s 2008 Spelling Bee. �The individual school spelling bees are the path to the national finals,� she said. �Our champions are practicing and hoping to bring a new award to their schools.�
UPDATE - MARCH 21, 2009 Rolling Hills student Rex Gao was one of the top 50 spellers from the Written competition to go on to the Final Spelling Bee on March 21st, in San Francisco.
The single winner of the Final Spelling Bee will go to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC in May. |
